UNAMA: Taliban Have Detained at Least 30 Women in Herat Over Their Dress Code

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has announced that the Taliban have detained at least 30 women in Herat Province over their choice of clothing.

Speaking at a special session of the United Nations Security Council on Afghanistan on Monday, June 9, Georgette Gagnon stated that the arrests are ongoing.

She said that Taliban authorities detained at least 30 women from various parts of Herat city on Saturday and Sunday and took them into custody. According to Gagnon, the women were arrested for failing to comply with the dress code prescribed by the Taliban.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that dozens more women have been detained and transferred to undisclosed locations for the third consecutive day since the launch of the campaign.

According to reports, the Taliban had previously announced that women who leave their homes without wearing a burqa, or whose hair or parts of their faces are visible, would face legal action. However, no detailed information has yet been released regarding the condition or whereabouts of the women detained in recent days.

At the same time, Richard Bennett described the arrests as “arbitrary,” stating that dozens of women in Herat have been detained for a third consecutive day for failing to adhere to the Taliban’s prescribed dress code.

In a post on X, Bennett wrote that the arrests are “unlawful and unacceptable,” stressing that the practice must cease immediately and that all detained women should be released without delay.

These remarks come amid growing international concern over restrictions imposed on women and girls in Afghanistan, which have repeatedly drawn criticism from human rights organizations and international bodies in recent months.
