Amid escalating tensions between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, the U.S. Senate on Thursday rejected a resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s authority to use military force against Tehran.
The measure failed by a vote of 50 to 49. It marked the second time in the past two weeks that U.S. senators have sought to invoke the War Powers Resolution to prevent the Trump administration from initiating or continuing military operations without congressional authorization.
Under the proposed resolution, the U.S. administration would have been required to withdraw American forces from any military engagement with the Islamic Republic of Iran that had not been authorized by Congress, unless lawmakers specifically approved the continuation of such operations.
The issue of restricting the president’s authority to use military force has returned to the forefront of debate in Congress following heightened tensions in the Middle East and the intensifying confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
Supporters of the resolution argued that, under the U.S. Constitution, the decision to enter a war rests with Congress and that the president should not be able to commit the country to a large-scale military conflict without congressional approval.
Opponents of the measure, including several Republican senators, contended that the president, as commander in chief of the armed forces, must retain the authority to respond swiftly to national security threats and defend U.S. national interests.
The vote took place as tensions between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran have once again intensified in recent days, making the scope of the president’s military powers one of the central issues under debate in the U.S. Congress.
