Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Peace, has said that Pakistan is facing serious political, economic, and security challenges, and that the overall situation in the country is deteriorating day by day.
In his recent remarks, Khalilzad said that after three years of imprisonment of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, the question should be asked whether this measure has benefited Pakistan or not. According to him, Pakistan’s current situation indicates that the answer to this question is negative.
He said Pakistan’s economy is facing a severe crisis and that the government is seeking financial assistance to stabilize the situation. He also pointed to the worsening security situation and rising violence in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Khalilzad added that problems have also emerged in Pakistan’s foreign policy, as, according to him, Islamabad’s relations with the Taliban and India have deteriorated.
He emphasized that fundamental reforms and national reconciliation are necessary to improve Pakistan’s situation.
These remarks come as Zalmay Khalilzad continues to face widespread criticism over the Doha Agreement, while, on the other hand, the U.S. president has expressed satisfaction with Pakistan’s army chief and prime minister several times in recent months.
