Summary

A medical student at Chiragh University in Kabul, Noor Noori, has been held for the past 41 days under the custody of the Anti-Kidnapping Directorate of the Taliban’s Ministry of Interior. His classmates say that Noori was on his way to meet a friend to receive money when he was detained by the Taliban.

Noor Noori was a fifth-semester medical student at Chiragh University, and the Taliban have so far not disclosed the reason for his detention.

One of his classmates, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, said that Noor Noori was arrested on June 2 in front of the Ministry of Interior in Kabul and has remained in the ministry’s detention facility since that day.

According to the source, at around 8:30 a.m. on June 2, Noori received a phone call while he was in front of the Ministry of Interior and was asked to come there to collect money. The source added that the money was intended to start a business, but employees of the Anti-Kidnapping Directorate detained him.

The source said that Noori planned to receive money to open a food shop. According to the source, one of his friends had promised to provide him with the funds as a loan.

It remains unclear what happened to the money and what the actual motive behind the incident was.

Noori’s classmates allege that the Taliban’s Ministry of Interior also demanded the passwords to his father’s social media accounts.

According to the source, Noori’s family is concerned about his fate and has called on the Taliban to provide clarification.

The Taliban’s Ministry of Interior has not yet issued an official response regarding these allegations.

Following the Taliban’s return to power, human rights organizations and United Nations bodies have repeatedly expressed concern over arrests and detentions.

UNAMA and Human Rights Watch have documented concerns in their reports regarding the arbitrary detention of some individuals, the lack of clarity over charges, and failures to follow due legal procedures. The Taliban, however, say that their actions regarding security incidents and criminal cases are carried out in accordance with applicable regulations.
