A North Korean soldier crossed the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas into South Korean territory.
South Korean authorities stated that the soldier crossed the border on Tuesday and was subsequently detained by South Korean forces after entering the country.
According to officials in South Korea, the soldier’s motive for crossing the border has not yet been officially disclosed, and investigations are ongoing.
Statistics from South Korea’s Ministry of Unification indicate that more than 34,000 North Korean citizens have defected to South Korea since 1998.
