Ali Khamenei, the former Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, was buried early Friday morning at the Imam Reza Shrine in the city of Mashhad. Before the burial ceremony, his eldest son, Mostafa Khamenei, performed the funeral prayer over his father’s body.
The funeral procession and burial ceremonies for Ali Khamenei concluded after 131 days. Prior to Mashhad, commemorative funeral ceremonies had been held in Tehran and Qom, as well as in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala.
During the funeral processions and burial ceremonies, Mojtaba Khamenei, Ali Khamenei’s second son, did not attend any of the events. His absence has prompted speculation in media outlets and on social media regarding his physical condition and whether he is alive.
Earlier, some media reports stated that Mojtaba Khamenei would not attend any of his father’s funeral ceremonies following recommendations from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). However, so far, officials of the Islamic Republic or the Office of the Supreme Leader have not provided any official explanation for his absence.
