England produced a remarkable comeback to defeat the Democratic Republic of the Congo 2-1 and secure a place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Harry Kane scored both goals for England, converting two assists from Anthony Gordon to lead the Three Lions to victory.
DR Congo made a fearless start and took the lead in the seventh minute through Bryan Sipenga. The African side maintained its advantage for the remainder of the first half, heading into the break with a 1-0 lead and threatening one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.
England increased the pressure after the restart in search of an equalizer. The introduction of Anthony Gordon in the 61st minute transformed the match, and in the 75th minute he delivered a pinpoint cross for Harry Kane, who headed home to level the score.
Gordon provided another precise assist in the 86th minute, setting up Kane once again. The England captain fired a powerful finish into the net to complete the turnaround and seal a 2-1 victory, sending the Three Lions through to the Round of 16.
With his brace, Kane increased his tally to five goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 13 goals overall in World Cup history. England will face co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 16 on July 5.
