The Taliban-controlled disaster management authority in Kunar Province has announced that two people have died following flooding in Nurgal District of the province. The authority said the incident also caused significant financial losses for local residents.
Taliban officials said on Tuesday, August 4, that floods in the Tang-e Sohail area of Nurgal District, Kunar Province, damaged a number of homes and personal belongings. They added that assessments are still underway to determine the full extent of the damage and whether the death toll could rise.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall and flooding in Barg-e Matal District of Nuristan Province have also caused widespread destruction. Local Taliban officials said that three children have gone missing as a result of the floods, and search efforts to locate them are ongoing.
According to information provided by local Taliban authorities, 87 residential houses, a main mosque, irrigation canals, electricity infrastructure, and parts of agricultural land have been damaged in Barg-e Matal District. The officials have not provided an exact estimate of the financial losses.
Amir Khan, the Taliban deputy district governor in Barg-e Matal, said that search operations for the three missing children are continuing. He did not provide further details about their condition or circumstances.
Earlier, Afghanistan’s meteorological authority had warned of the possibility of heavy rainfall and flash floods in 12 provinces, including Kunar and Nuristan. In recent days, several parts of Afghanistan have experienced repeated flooding.
Previously, on July 20, floods in Parun, the capital of Nuristan Province, and several other areas of the province killed at least 40 people and caused extensive damage to residents.
