Pakistani media have reported that the prominent religious scholar, Maulana Sheikh Idrees, was killed by unknown armed assailants in Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The incident occurred this morning, and the attackers fled after opening fire.
He was a member of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party, led by Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and had been engaged in religious activities for many years. It is said that he was also a teacher to some Afghan Taliban members.
Recently, Maulana Sheikh Idrees had made statements supporting the Pakistani military, led by General Asim Munir, and the government, which led to significant criticism and made his remarks highly controversial.
So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but security agencies have launched investigations into the incident.
