On Wednesday evening, the 3rd of Saratan (Cancer month), the Taliban reportedly detained a number of women in the “64-Meter Road” area of Herat city. Eyewitnesses say they saw several women being transported in a Taliban coaster-type vehicle, although the exact number of detainees remains unclear.
It is reported that these arrests were carried out after official government working hours and during the night.
In Herat, the campaign of detaining women has been ongoing since the 16th of Jawza and has triggered widespread domestic and international reactions.
During protests against these arrests, at least two people were killed on the 19th of Jawza in the Jebrael township area of Herat city.
Following these incidents, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) called on the Taliban to respect human rights, freedom of movement, and the principle of equality of all individuals before the law, and to end the detention of women on the basis of their dress code.
Similarly, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have urged the Taliban to immediately stop the use of force against protesters in Herat, release those detained, and respect the rights of women and girls. These rights include freedom of movement, freedom of expression, and the right to peaceful assembly and protest.
