Madari Ali Karimi, one of the few Hazara Shiite officials in the Taliban government and deputy minister of urban development and housing of the group, has apologized for the treatment of Shiites by Taliban forces.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the ninth of Muharram in western Kabul, Karimi criticized the manner in which Shiites have been treated and said that he had raised the issue of restrictions imposed on Muharram commemorations, as well as the arrest of a number of citizens, with senior Taliban officials.
He also stated that some of the orders issued by the Taliban’s prime minister have not been fully implemented and emphasized the need to address the matter.
These remarks come amid recent reports of restrictions on Muharram ceremonies and the detention of several citizens in parts of Afghanistan.
