Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has stated that his country will not support or participate in a U.S.-led naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
On Monday, he said that London’s goal is to reopen the waterway and maintain freedom of navigation for ships, not to join a new military action.
In an interview with British media, Starmer emphasized that the UK does not want to be dragged into war and would only engage in military action if there is a clear legal basis and a specific plan. He stressed that the openness of the Strait of Hormuz is of immediate importance to the global economy.
U.S. President Donald Trump, after peace talks with Iran failed, had announced that the U.S. would begin a naval blockade related to ship traffic to and from Iranian ports starting Monday. According to him, this action will apply to ships entering or leaving Iranian ports, not all ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
