Ali Akbar Amiri, Afghanistan’s national heavyweight taekwondo athlete, suffered a narrow 2–1 defeat to an Iranian opponent at the eighth edition of the World Taekwondo Federation (WT) President’s Cup in Lahore, Pakistan, bringing his campaign to an end.
Amiri delivered a strong performance in the opening round, securing the round in his favor. The second round ended scoreless, but the Iranian taekwondo athlete was awarded the round on superiority, leveling the match at 1–1.
The third round remained closely contested, with both athletes matching each other until the final moments. However, the Iranian fighter ultimately prevailed by a two-point margin. Despite a respectable performance, Amiri was eliminated from the competition.
On the opening day of the kyorugi competition, athletes competed in three men’s weight categories. According to the organizers, taekwondo athletes from Iran, South Korea, Türkiye, Thailand, and Uzbekistan won medals on the day, among representatives from more than 40 countries.
