Mahmoud Saiqal, Afghanistan’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, says that the absence of governmental legitimacy and the rule of law under Taliban rule has made Afghanistan vulnerable to external interference.
He has called on opponents of the Taliban to set aside their differences and agree on a unified strategy in order to effectively respond to ongoing crises and Pakistani attacks.
According to the former diplomat, an effective response to Pakistan’s attacks depends on resolving internal divisions, forming a common vision, developing a unified strategy, and establishing an alternative political structure among Taliban opponents.
Saikal also stressed that no external crisis can grant legitimacy to the Taliban. Expressing regret over Pakistani attacks on Afghan territory, he added that condemnations so far have remained at the level of statements and have not translated into practical or deterrent measures.
