In a new resolution, the European Parliament has called for the closure of Iranian embassies and consulates across all member states of the European Union.
Members of the European Parliament approved the resolution on Thursday, May 21, with 516 votes in favor, 14 against, and 39 abstentions.
In the resolution, the European Parliament urged EU member states to shut down Iran’s diplomatic missions, expand sanctions against officials of the Islamic Republic, and impose entry bans on members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps into the European Union.
The resolution states that the people of Iran are facing “the largest mass killing of protesters in the country’s history,” and that the Iranian government is using the death penalty as “a tool to prevent political mobilization and suppress dissent.”
The European Parliament strongly condemned the use of capital punishment and called for its complete abolition in Iran.
Lawmakers also condemned the secret executions of political opponents during March and April 2026, including the execution of minors, and called on Iranian authorities to immediately release all political prisoners.
The resolution further urged EU member states to expand sanctions against officials responsible for repression, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and institutions linked to Iran’s Supreme Leader.
Members of the European Parliament also called for IRGC members and family members loyal to the Iranian government to be banned from entering the European Union, and for all sanctions to be fully enforced.
In one of the strongest parts of the resolution, the European Parliament accused Iranian embassies of participating in the suppression of Iranian protesters abroad.
Lawmakers urged EU member states to “close Iranian diplomatic missions linked to transnational repression.”
The European Parliament stated that the Iranian government’s crackdown on protesters could amount to “crimes against humanity.”
Iran has not yet responded to the European Parliament’s new resolution.
