In its latest report, UNICEF has warned that if restrictions on girls’ education in Afghanistan continue, the country will face a serious shortage of female teachers and healthcare workers by 2030.
The report indicates that due to the Taliban’s ban on the education of girls over the age of 12, around 20,000 female teachers and nearly 5,400 female healthcare workers will miss out on education and will not enter the workforce in the coming years.
UNICEF adds that this restriction has already caused over a million girls to be deprived of education, and this situation will further exacerbate the shortage of female labor in the future. According to the report, the current shortage of female workers in professional sectors will increase by about 25%.
UNICEF emphasized that continuing girls’ education is not only a matter of women’s rights but is also vital for the future of education and healthcare in Afghanistan.
