The Execution of a Flogging Sentence on a Man in Shurtapa District, Balkh Province.

The Supreme Court of the Taliban has announced that a man has been flogged in the Shurtapa district of Balkh province. On Thursday, the 13th of Hamal, the court stated that the man was punished with 30 lashes in public for allegedly having sexual relations.

The Taliban’s primary court in Shurtapa district also sentenced him to two years of non-executive imprisonment.

Despite international organizations’ opposition to torture and physical punishment of detainees, the Taliban continues to carry out public floggings. The group refers to these acts as the implementation of “Islamic Sharia.”

In a report released on the 5th of Hamal, the Human Rights Organization “Ravadari” stated that last year, the Taliban imposed “cruel, inhuman, and degrading” punishments, including issuing six death sentences, stoning one woman, and carrying out 857 public floggings.

It was also reported that during the same period, 611 individuals, including 128 women and 35 children, were killed and injured in a targeted and mysterious manner by the Taliban and unknown individuals.

According to Ravadari’s report, the victims were mainly former government employees, protesters, civil and human rights activists, tribal leaders, and individuals whom the Taliban accused of cooperating with opposition groups.
