Bakhtar News Agency, which is under Taliban control, reported that 18 people, including women and children, were killed and 29 others injured after a vehicle carrying migrants returning from Pakistan overturned in Laghman Province.
Local Taliban officials in Laghman said the accident occurred at around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, the 9th of Jawza (May 30), in Qarghayi District of the province.
Images released from the scene show that the vehicle was a cargo truck, with the bodies of the victims lying around it.
Younis Yousafzai, spokesperson for the Taliban Police Command in Laghman, said that the injured were transferred to the regional hospital in Nangarhar Province. According to him, the condition of some of the injured is reported to be critical.
The exact cause of the traffic accident has not yet been announced. However, driver negligence, excessive speeding, and poor road conditions have long been considered the main causes of such deadly accidents on Afghanistan’s highways.
