Sunderland Football Club in England has strongly condemned the online racist abuse directed at Brian Brobbey, the team’s forward. This incident occurred after Sunderland’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
According to Reuters, during the match, Brobbey was involved in a key moment where Tottenham’s captain, Cristian Romero, collided with his own goalkeeper, Antonin Kinski, under pressure from Brobbey. As a result of the collision, Romero left the field in distress, tearfully, while Kinski continued to play with a heavy bandage on his head.
In a statement, Sunderland emphasized: “We stand firmly with Brian and express our full and unconditional support for him.”
The club also pointed out that this incident is not an isolated case, as players such as Roman Mandl and Lothar Haertroida have faced similar behavior in recent weeks.
The statement further mentioned that the club has reported this matter to the Premier League, social media platforms, and the police, and expects swift and serious action to be taken against the perpetrators of this behavior.
With this win, Sunderland has moved up to 10th place in the league table and will face Aston Villa, the 4th-placed team, in their next match.
