Inamullah Wazir, an official of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, announced that after the end of the Eid al-Adha holidays, the Torkham border crossing has once again been reopened for Afghan migrants and families returning to Afghanistan.
The deputy police officer of Landi Kotal said on Saturday, May 30, that vehicles carrying Afghan migrants, as well as empty vehicles returning from Afghanistan to Pakistan, have resumed normal movement. According to him, the process of repatriating Afghan migrants continues in an organized manner under the supervision of the relevant authorities.
The Pakistani official added that the Torkham crossing had been closed to returning migrants from June 26 to June 29 due to the Eid al-Adha holidays, and that its operations have now resumed.
The reopening of the crossing comes at a time when Torkham had faced extensive restrictions on trade and transit for months following border tensions and clashes between the Taliban and Pakistan. However, about three months ago, the crossing was reactivated for the return of Afghan migrants from Pakistan.
Meanwhile, a number of Afghan migrants have complained about lengthy administrative procedures for repatriation and the lack of facilities at the Landi Kotal camp, calling for improved conditions and services for migrants.
In recent months, Pakistan has intensified the arrest and deportation of Afghan migrants, and thousands of migrants have been returned from Pakistan to Afghanistan.
